Five Himalayan Viewpoints Tour from Pokhara: The Complete Guide

BBishowSaturday, September 19, 20264 min read

Pokhara sits in a bowl with hills on every side, and each one gives a different angle on the Annapurna range. This day links five viewpoints by vehicle — Sarangkot at dawn, Kahun Danda, Pumdikot, the World Peace Pagoda and Begnas Lake — so you see the same mountains from five sides and the valley itself from every direction.

It is more rewarding than it sounds. Sarangkot gives the classic dawn panorama; Kahun Danda looks back over the town and the Seti gorge; Pumdikot's new 51-foot Shiva statue faces the range head-on; the Peace Pagoda frames the lake; and Begnas, twenty minutes east, is the quiet lake that Phewa used to be, with fishing boats and no crowds.

The Five Viewpoints

Sarangkot (1,600 m) — dawn

The classic. A pre-dawn drive up the ridge west of the lake, tea at the top, and then the Annapurna wall — Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre and Annapurna II — lighting up peak by peak. Tea before sunrise is included, which matters at 5 am in January.

Kahun Danda

The hill on the eastern side of town, looking back across Pokhara and down into the Seti gorge — a slot canyon running under the city that most visitors never see properly. There is a view tower and an old fort site.

Pumdikot

South of the lake, and the newest of the five. A 51-foot Shiva statue on a hilltop facing the range head-on, with a shrine complex around it. It has become a major domestic destination and is worth seeing for that as much as the view.

The World Peace Pagoda above Phewa Lake, Pokhara, Nepal.
The World Peace Pagoda, framing Phewa Lake with the range behind it.

World Peace Pagoda

A white stupa on the ridge above the southern shore, built by Japanese Buddhists, with the best composition of the day: the lake below, the town beyond it, and the range behind. A few hundred steps from the parking area.

Begnas Lake

Twenty minutes east, and the quiet lake Phewa used to be — fishing boats, terraced hills, almost no development. A boat on Begnas in the afternoon is included, and it is the most restful hour of the day.

What It Costs

What Is Included

  • Private transportation — a vehicle and driver for the full itinerary, including hotel pickup and drop-off.
  • Entry and parking fees at all five viewpoints.
  • A government-licensed English-speaking guide for the day.
  • Bottled water in the vehicle.
  • Tea at the Sarangkot viewpoint before sunrise.
  • A boat on Begnas Lake in the afternoon.
  • All government taxes and service charges.

What Is Not Included

  • Travel insurance covering medical treatment and emergency evacuation.
  • Lunch and any meals not specified — your guide will suggest lakeside places.
  • Optional paragliding or other adventure activities.
  • Luxury vehicle upgrade — private transport is included as standard.
  • Drinks, snacks, laundry, phone calls and souvenirs.
  • Tips for the guide and driver.
  • Any additional cost caused by roadblocks, weather or other circumstances beyond our control.

The obvious add-on: the sunrise tour finishes at Sarangkot at about the time the paragliding pilots arrive, so a tandem flight slots straight into the morning. See our paragliding guide.

Will You Actually See the Mountains?

In the season, on most mornings, yes — but nobody can promise it. Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre and Dhaulagiri are visible from the Pokhara viewpoints on a clear day, and the clarity is far better from October to April than at any other time.

SeasonOdds
October to DecemberThe best of the year. Clear, sharp mornings and reliable views.
January to FebruaryVery clear and very cold at dawn. Bring a warm layer for Sarangkot.
March to AprilHaze builds through the spring. Mornings usually still work.
May to SeptemberUnreliable. The monsoon hides the range for days at a time.

Go early whatever the month. Cloud builds over the range from mid-morning regardless of season.

Frequently Asked Questions

1
Will we definitely see the mountains?

In the season, on most mornings, yes — but nobody can promise it. Annapurna South, Machhapuchhre and Dhaulagiri are visible from the Pokhara viewpoints on a clear day. October to December are the most reliable months; the monsoon can hide the range for days.

2
How early does the tour start?

Pickup is between 4.30 and 5.30 am depending on the season, so that you are on the Sarangkot hill before first light. It is early and it is cold in winter, but the dawn light is the reason the day is shaped this way. Tea at the top is included.

3
Is much walking involved?

Very little. A few hundred steps at the World Peace Pagoda and short strolls at the other viewpoints. The vehicle takes you between all five. Tell us about mobility limits and we can substitute or skip the Pagoda climb.

4
Is the boat on Begnas Lake included?

Yes — a boat in the afternoon, which is the most restful part of the day. Begnas is twenty minutes east of Pokhara and is the quiet lake that Phewa used to be, with fishing boats and almost no development along the shore.

5
Can we do this by ourselves?

You could, and Pokhara is easy to navigate. What the tour buys is the vehicle timed around the light, a guide who explains what you are seeing, the entry and parking fees handled, and the sequencing — five viewpoints in a day only works if someone has planned the order.

6
Can we add paragliding to the same day?

Yes, and it is the most popular combination we sell. The sunrise section finishes at Sarangkot at about the time the paragliding pilots arrive, so a tandem flight slots straight in. Tell us at booking so the rest of the day is re-sequenced around it.

7
Is lunch included?

Not usually. Your guide will suggest lakeside places and will eat separately unless you invite them. Tell us at booking if you would rather have it included and we will arrange it.

8
What is Pumdikot?

A hilltop shrine complex south of Phewa Lake with a 51-foot Shiva statue facing the Annapurna range head-on. It is the newest of the five viewpoints and has become a major destination for Nepali visitors, which makes it interesting for reasons beyond the view.
