Short Treks from Pokhara: Himalayan Walks in 3 to 10 Days

BBishowThursday, September 10, 20263 min read

Pokhara has an unusual geographic advantage. It sits at 820 m on a lake with the Annapurna range 30 km to the north, and the trailheads for half a dozen genuine Himalayan treks are a 60 to 110 minute drive away. No domestic flight, no Kathmandu transfer, no weather lottery.

That makes it the right base for anyone with less than a fortnight — and it means the cheapest treks in this catalogue are also some of the best.

Choosing by the Days You Have

Three days

Poon Hill, and nothing else realistically. Drive to Nayapul, two days of walking through rhododendron forest, a dawn climb to 3,210 m for Dhaulagiri and Annapurna South, and back. It is the cheapest trek in this catalogue and it delivers a genuine Himalayan sunrise.

Five days

The richest band. Mardi Himal for a ridge walk with Machhapuchhre overhead — our most-recommended short trek. Annapurna Base Camp if the Sanctuary is what you came for, though five days makes it a harder trip than nine. Jomsom Muktinath if you want desert and culture rather than forest and snow.

Six to eight days

Mohare Danda for community lodges and solitude, Khori Himal for a trail almost nobody has heard of, Lower Mustang for the Kali Gandaki and Marpha's apple orchards, or ABC with Poon Hill to combine the two classics.

Nine to ten days

Khopra Danda for the best quiet ridge in the region, or Mardi Himal plus Annapurna Base Camp — two base camps, a ridge above the treeline, and the Jhinu Danda hot springs in between. The single best use of ten days available from Pokhara.

Why Pokhara Beats Kathmandu as a Base

  • No flight. All these trailheads are reached by road in 60 to 110 minutes. Nothing to be cancelled by cloud.
  • No transfer days. A Kathmandu-start itinerary spends two days getting to and from Pokhara. Starting here saves both.
  • Lower cost. Those two days and the optional flight come off the price, which is why Pokhara-start treks are the cheapest we run.
  • Pokhara is pleasant to come back to. Lakeside hotels, good food, and Phewa Lake after a week in the hills.
  • An international airport. Since 2023, some travellers fly into Pokhara directly and never see Kathmandu.
  • Free storage. Hotels hold what you do not take on the trail.

The flip side: you miss Kathmandu's UNESCO sites and the Khumbu is out of reach without going back east. If your trip is two weeks or less and the Annapurna region is the target, starting in Pokhara is simply more efficient.

Non-Trekking Days in Pokhara

Most people take a day either side of the trek. Things genuinely worth doing:

  • Paragliding from Sarangkot — a tandem flight over Phewa Lake with the Annapurnas behind. Pokhara is one of the best paragliding sites in the world, and this is the standard add-on.
  • Sarangkot sunrise — a dawn drive to 1,592 m for the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri skyline.
  • Pokhara day tour — Phewa Lake, the Tal Barahi temple, the World Peace Pagoda, Devi's Fall and the Gupteshwor cave.
  • Mountain flight — an hour alongside the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs.
  • Seti river rafting — a gentle half day, good for a first time on whitewater.
  • The Zip Flyer — one of the steepest and longest ziplines in the world, from Sarangkot.
  • Parahawking — paragliding with trained raptors, which exists only here.

Frequently Asked Questions

1
What is the shortest trek from Pokhara?

Poon Hill at three days — a drive to Nayapul, two days walking through rhododendron forest to Ghorepani, a dawn climb to 3,210 m, and out. It is the cheapest trek we run and still gives you Dhaulagiri I and Annapurna I at sunrise.

2
What is the best short trek from Pokhara?

Mardi Himal, five days. It climbs through cloud forest to a ridge above the treeline and follows it north with Machhapuchhre almost directly ahead, with an optional dawn walk to 4,500 m. It is quieter than Poon Hill and more varied than any other five-day option.

3
Can I reach Annapurna Base Camp in five days from Pokhara?

Yes — the five-day version uses jeep transfers to shorten the walk in and still reaches Base Camp at 4,130 m. The daily stages are long and there is no slack in the schedule, so it is a harder five days than the nine-day version is nine days, but it works.

4
Do I need a flight for any of these treks?

No. Every trailhead listed is reached by road from Pokhara in 60 to 110 minutes, which is the main practical advantage of this region over the Everest treks. Jomsom Muktinath can optionally use a flight to Jomsom, but the road works too.

5
Is it cheaper to start in Pokhara than Kathmandu?

Yes. A Kathmandu-start itinerary includes two transfer days and sometimes a domestic flight, and removing them takes a meaningful amount off the price. Pokhara-start treks are the best-value trekking in Nepal.

6
Which short trek is best in winter?

Poon Hill and Mohare Danda, both low enough for comfortable nights with the clearest air of the year. Mardi Himal works below High Camp. Jomsom Muktinath and Lower Mustang are also good winter options, being dry and in the rain shadow.

7
How do I get to Pokhara?

Six to seven hours by road from Kathmandu, 25 minutes by air, or directly into Pokhara International Airport, which opened in 2023 and takes some regional flights. Many travellers drive one way and fly the other.
