Pokhara Helicopter Sightseeing Tour: The Complete Guide

BBishowSaturday, September 19, 20264 min read

The Pokhara helicopter sightseeing tour is a one-hour scenic charter over the Annapurna foothills with a landing at a high viewpoint — the short, affordable helicopter option for people who do not want to commit to the full Annapurna Base Camp flight.

It lifts from Pokhara, climbs over Sarangkot and Phewa Lake, and flies north into the Seti and Modi valleys with the range filling the windscreen. The aircraft lands for fifteen to twenty minutes on a ridge or high pasture at around 3,500 m to 3,800 m — the exact site depends on conditions and the pilot's judgement — which is long enough to stand on a Himalayan hillside, take photographs with the rotor stopped, and drink a cup of tea in absolute silence.

Then back down the valley to Pokhara. The whole thing takes a morning.

We run it as a one-hour charter from Pokhara. For the full flight to the Sanctuary, see the Annapurna Base Camp helicopter tour; the cheapest way to get airborne is the ultralight.

The Route

The aircraft lifts from the Pokhara helipad and climbs almost immediately — within two minutes you are above Sarangkot and looking down on Phewa Lake and the whole valley.

North into the Seti and Modi valleys, with the country changing fast underneath: terraces, then forest, then pasture, then rock. Machhapuchhre and Annapurna South fill the windscreen on the approach, and the scale only registers properly once you are level with the foothills rather than looking up at them.

The landing site is chosen on the day. A ridge or high pasture somewhere between 3,500 m and 3,800 m, picked by the pilot on conditions — which is honest rather than evasive, because the safe options change with wind, cloud and snow.

The foothills below Annapurna III — the kind of ground the aircraft lands on.

The rotor is shut down for the ground stop, which is the detail that makes it. Fifteen to twenty minutes of complete silence at 3,500 m, with hot drinks, and no engine noise and no other people.

How It Compares

OptionWhat you getFrom
Ultralight flight15 to 60 minutes, open cockpit, up to around 3,500 m, no landingUSD 165
This flightOne hour, a landing at 3,500–3,800 m with the rotor stoppedUSD 480
ABC helicopter tourA landing in the Annapurna Sanctuary at 4,130 mSee the ABC heli guide
Mountain flightA fixed-wing pass along the range, no landingSee the mountain flights guide

The thing this flight buys over the cheaper options is the ground stop. Standing on a mountainside in silence is a completely different experience from flying past one, and it is the reason to spend the difference.

Altitude

You go from 822 m to around 3,800 m in about half an hour, with no acclimatisation. For a fifteen-minute stop that is fine for most people, but a few things are worth knowing.

  • Move slowly on the ground. Walking briskly at 3,800 m straight out of an aircraft is what causes the headaches.
  • Supplementary oxygen and a first aid kit are carried on board.
  • Tell the crew if you feel unwell — you are minutes from Pokhara by air.
  • Heart or lung conditions warrant a conversation before booking.

See our altitude guide and the helicopter tours guide for the wider picture.

What It Costs

Group sizePrice per person
1 travellerUSD 670
2 to 4USD 595
5 to 7USD 545
8 to 10USD 520
11 to 14USD 500
15 and overUSD 480
Per person, including hotel transfers, the charter, the landing and hot drinks at the viewpoint.

As with every helicopter product, the aircraft cost is fixed, so the per-person price falls steeply as the party grows.

Frequently Asked Questions

1
Where does the helicopter land?

On a ridge or high pasture somewhere between 3,500 m and 3,800 m in the Annapurna foothills. The exact site is chosen by the pilot on the day based on wind, cloud and snow — which is honest rather than evasive, because the safe options genuinely change with conditions.

2
How long are we on the ground?

Fifteen to twenty minutes with the rotor shut down, which is the detail that makes this flight worth its price. Complete silence at 3,500 m with hot drinks and nobody else around is a different experience from flying past the same mountainside.

3
How does this compare with the Annapurna Base Camp helicopter tour?

This is the shorter and cheaper option — one hour of flying with a foothills landing, rather than a landing inside the Annapurna Sanctuary at 4,130 m. If the Sanctuary itself is what you came for, book the ABC flight; if you want a Himalayan landing without that commitment, book this.

4
Is 3,800 m safe with no acclimatisation?

For a fifteen to twenty minute stop, for most healthy people, yes — but move slowly on the ground, which is where the headaches come from. Supplementary oxygen and a first aid kit are carried on board. Heart or lung conditions warrant a conversation before booking.

5
What happens if the weather cancels the flight?

We rebook you for the next morning where your schedule allows, and refund if there is no workable window. Mountain flying in Nepal is a morning activity because cloud builds over the range through the day, so afternoon flights are rarely viable.

6
Will everyone get a window seat?

In a five-seat aircraft, effectively yes — there is a window either side of every row and the pilot banks on the scenic legs so both sides get the view. Seat allocation is determined by weight distribution rather than preference.

7
Is insurance required for a helicopter flight?

Yes, and check the wording carefully. Many travel policies exclude helicopter activity or treat it as an optional extra. Confirm the cover before you travel rather than at the helipad.

8
How early does the flight leave?

Early. Pickup from your Pokhara hotel is typically shortly after first light, and the whole thing takes a morning including transfers, the briefing and the flight itself. The Annapurna range is clearest in the first hours of the day.
