Nepal has more than thirty species of rhododendron, and the national flower — lali gurans, Rhododendron arboreum — grows as a full-sized tree rather than the garden shrub most visitors picture. Between late March and late April, whole hillsides of mid-altitude forest turn crimson and pink, and several of the country's best trails run straight through the middle of it.
The bloom is narrow and it moves. Catching it is a matter of matching your dates to an altitude, and this guide explains how.
How the Bloom Moves
Rhododendron flowers from the bottom of its altitude range upward as spring warms the hillside, at roughly 300 m a week.
| Altitude | Typical peak bloom | Species and colour |
|---|---|---|
| 1,500–2,000 m | Early to mid March | Rhododendron arboreum, deep crimson, tall trees |
| 2,000–2,600 m | Mid to late March | Arboreum and barbatum, red to pink, the densest forest |
| 2,600–3,200 m | Late March to mid April | Pink and white campanulatum, smaller trees |
| 3,200–3,800 m | Mid April to early May | Campanulatum and lepidotum, pink, white and pale yellow shrubs |
| 3,800–4,500 m | Late April to May | Dwarf alpine species, cushions rather than trees |
The practical consequence: if you arrive in early April, go high; if you arrive in early March, stay low. A trek that climbs through several altitude bands in a week — which most Annapurna treks do — will find the bloom somewhere along the way almost regardless of your dates.
The Best Trails for Rhododendron
- Mardi Himal — the single best rhododendron trek in Nepal. The forest between Pitam Deurali and Forest Camp is dense, moss-hung arboreum that flowers from late March, and the trail goes through the middle of it for three hours.
- Poon Hill and Ghorepani — the climb from Ulleri to Ghorepani is a famous rhododendron stretch, peaking late March to mid April. Combine it with the Sanctuary on this 12-day itinerary.
- Annapurna Base Camp — the gorge between Chhomrong and Deurali carries rhododendron and bamboo, flowering through April.
- Khopra Danda — the forest above Swanta, with far fewer people in it.
- Langtang Valley — the climb from Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel runs through superb rhododendron and oak, peaking late March.
- Pikey Peak — the Solukhumbu forest around Junbesi, flowering in April, with Everest above it.
- Red Panda Trail — in eastern Nepal, which has the greatest rhododendron diversity in the country, with species found nowhere else on the trekking map.
- Tamang Heritage Trail — forest above Gatlang and Tatopani, mid to late April.
Timing a Trek for the Bloom
| Your dates | Best choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Early March | Poon Hill, Langtang Valley | Lower forest bands are opening first |
| Mid to late March | Mardi Himal, Ghorepani | Peak arboreum between 2,000 m and 2,600 m — the best window of all |
| Early April | Annapurna Base Camp, Khopra Danda | Bloom has moved to 2,600–3,200 m, right where these trails climb |
| Mid to late April | Pikey Peak, Tamang Heritage, high Annapurna | Higher bands and the eastern hills flowering |
| May | High-altitude routes | Only dwarf alpine species remain, above 3,800 m |
One trade-off to know about. Spring is hazier than autumn, and the haze builds through April — so a trek timed for peak bloom will have slightly softer mountain views than the same trek in November. If the flowers matter more than the horizon, late March is the answer; if the reverse, go in autumn and accept a green forest. Our seasons guide covers the full picture.
What Else Is Flowering
Rhododendron gets the attention, but spring in the Nepali hills is busier than that:
- Magnolia campbellii — huge white and pink flowers on bare trees in February and March, often above the rhododendron belt.
- Daphne and primula — along trail edges through March and April.
- Orchids — Nepal has over 400 species; the epiphytes on oak trunks in the Annapurna forest flower in spring.
- Blue poppy (Meconopsis) — the celebrated one, flowering in June and July at 4,000 to 5,000 m, which is why monsoon trekking in the rain-shadow regions has its own following.
- Buckwheat in flower — pink and white fields in Mustang and Manang in July and August.
Two practical notes for photographing the bloom. The forest is at its best in flat light or light cloud rather than hard midday sun, which blows out the red and loses the detail in the canopy — so the hour after you start walking is usually better than the middle of the day. And the mist that hangs in the Mardi Himal and Ghorepani forests on spring mornings is not a problem to wait out; it is the thing that makes those photographs work.
For the high-altitude flowers, the season is the monsoon rather than spring — see our monsoon trekking guide for the rain-shadow routes where July is the best month of the year.
