These two treks are the obvious alternatives if you want a long Himalayan circuit in Nepal. Both take around fifteen days, both cross a pass above 5,000 m, both end in the Marsyangdi valley, and they share a border. They are not interchangeable.
The honest summary before the detail: Manaslu is the better walk, Annapurna is the more varied journey. Which matters more to you decides it.

| Difficulty | Challenging | Moderate to challenging |
Where Manaslu Wins
- No roads. The whole restricted section from Jagat to Dharapani is walking trail. On Annapurna, roads reach Manang and Muktinath and the low approach and walk-out are road-affected.
- Far fewer trekkers. The permit system and the two-person minimum keep numbers down. In the gorge you will often walk alone.
- Cultural coherence. From Namrung upward the valley is Tibetan — architecture, language, religion, economy. It feels like one place rather than a transition.
- Manaslu itself. Samagaun sits beneath the north face of an 8,163 m mountain, with a base camp walk to 4,800 m and Birendra Lake below the glacier. Annapurna's eight-thousanders are mostly seen across a valley.
- The Tsum Valley option. Adding Tsum makes a twenty-day trek with cultural depth that Annapurna cannot match.
- It feels like an expedition. The gorge is committing, the lodges are simple, and retreat from beyond Samdo means walking back out. That is part of the appeal.
Where Annapurna Wins
- Landscape variety. Rice paddies at 800 m to Tibetan desert at 3,800 m, through the Kali Gandaki between two eight-thousanders. No trek in Nepal covers more ground.
- No restricted permit and no group minimum. A solo trekker can do it with a guide; Manaslu needs two people.
- Better lodges. Manang has bakeries, a cinema and an HRA aid post. Chame and Jomsom are comfortable towns.
- Cheaper. No restricted permit, and road access keeps lodge prices down.
- Easier to shorten. Jeeps allow a 7-day version that still crosses Thorong La. Manaslu cannot be meaningfully compressed.
- More escape options. Roads at Manang and Muktinath mean a sick trekker can get out quickly. On Manaslu, beyond Samdo there is no road for days.
- Muktinath. A major pilgrimage site with 108 water spouts and an eternal flame, which is a genuine cultural highlight.
- Tilicho Lake. A 4,919 m lake as a side trip, which is one of the best detours in Nepal.

| To trek solo | Annapurna — Manaslu needs two people |
| To get close to an 8,000 m peak | Manaslu |
| Comfortable lodges and good food | Annapurna |
| A seven-day version | Annapurna's short circuit |
| The highest pass | Annapurna — Thorong La at 5,416 m |

| The lowest cost | Annapurna |
A practical note on sequencing: most trekkers who do both go Annapurna first and Manaslu second, and almost all of them say Manaslu was the better trek. That is not because Annapurna is poor — it is because Manaslu is what Annapurna was, and having walked the busier route first makes the difference obvious.
Or Link Them
The two circuits meet at Dharapani. You can walk Manaslu over the Larke La, arrive at Dharapani, and instead of driving out continue up the Marsyangdi to Manang, Thorong La and Muktinath.
That makes a trek of around four weeks with two 5,000 m passes, and it is one of the great Himalayan traverses — a full crossing of the Manaslu and Annapurna ranges on foot. With the Tsum Valley added at the start it becomes five weeks and is about as complete a central Nepal trek as exists.
It needs the Manaslu restricted permit, MCAP and ACAP, a group of two or more, and serious fitness. If you have the month, tell us and we will build it. Otherwise, the fifteen-day Manaslu Circuit and the fifteen-day Annapurna Circuit are both complete treks in their own right, and our Manaslu guide and Annapurna guide cover each in full.
